Feeling Overwhelmed in Work and Life

Summary

During a teleconference with twenty solo entrepreneurs, consultants, and coaches, we discussed a common issue: feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, and burned out due to the relentless "too much to do, can't stop now" mindset.

Are You Constantly on the Go?

It's rare to meet someone who hasn't felt overwhelmed at some point. This uncomfortable feeling is often seen as negative or as a sign of weakness, leading many to keep it to themselves. The resulting isolation only worsens the situation.

We frequently deny our overwhelm because we don't know how to break the cycle. Often, our work environment doesn’t help either. Studies show that Americans now work more hours than the Japanese, logging up to 50-72 hours a week.

Why do we do this to ourselves?

Although this pattern often starts in the workplace, it spills over into our personal and family lives. Focusing on projects can begin with the best intentions but can quickly become overwhelming without a plan to balance our workload.

Completing projects like writing web content or designing a sales brochure is crucial, but maintaining a healthy, balanced life is just as important. Stressful patterns signal that change is necessary. Recognizing this makes it easier to take steps towards a healthier balance.

Helpful Strategies

Based on my experiences and insights from coaching clients who feel burned out, here are strategies to alleviate overwhelm and help make better work/life balance decisions:

1. Take Breaks: Pause for a few minutes. Go for a short walk, sit outside, meditate, breathe deeply, watch a movie, or have coffee with a friend to share what's happening.

2. Prioritize Tasks: On a piece of paper, create two columns. In one, list urgent tasks for the week. In the other, list projects you can delegate or outsource.

3. Declutter: Unsubscribe from unnecessary emails, organize your workspace, stop attending non-essential meetings, and limit volunteering unless you’re passionate about the cause.

4. Choose Your Company Wisely: Spend time with people who support and value you. Avoid those who are negative or don't align with your vision.

5. Focus on What Matters: Determine what's most important to you. Achieving balance may require changes and planning, but the improvement will be worth it.

6. Take Action Now: Make a change today. Call a supportive friend, take a class to get organized, or work with a coach to motivate you toward a more balanced life.

By implementing these strategies, you can begin to reduce the feeling of being overwhelmed and start working towards a more balanced life.
