The Development of the "I"
Exploring the Evolution of Identity
Introduction
Last week, I watched my brother as he tried to teach my three-year-old niece to say "I" ?" as in, "I would like an apple... I would like some grapes..." Humorously, she insisted on saying, "Vaishali wants an apple, Vaishali wants some grapes...!" Ever tried arguing with a three-year-old?
Interestingly, she had a point. At three, she hasn't yet started forming her personal identity.
The Journey of Identity Formation
When you're born, you're whole, complete, and perfect. But as life progresses, illusions begin to obscure your perception of reality. We instinctively create our own interpretations of the world because we are "meaning-making machines." We filter experiences through deletion, distortion, and generalization, adding meaning without questioning its truthfulness.
Early Identity Layers
- Ages 1 to 5: A situation arises that makes you feel inadequate. You internalize the message, "I failed to be..." and decide to become "X." This becomes the first layer of your identity.
- Ages 5 to 15: You encounter situations where you feel like an outsider. The belief, "I am different and not meant to be here," prompts you to become "Y" to fit in. This adds another layer.
- Beyond Age 15: You may feel isolated, thinking, "I am alone," and choose to become "Z" to assert your uniqueness. This forms the third layer of identity.
Unraveling the Truth
Essentially, you discover that these constructed identities are false narratives. As you embrace awareness and spirituality, you start to question, "WHO AM I?" Deep down, you know the formula of identity, I = X + Y + Z, is not true. Everything is perfect as it is; it's merely the meanings you've attributed to experiences.
You genuinely belong and are meant to be here. You are not alone; you're connected to the infinite, conscious, and blissful energy that permeates everything. You remain as whole and complete as you were at birth, and you have the freedom to redefine your identity with honesty.
Embracing Your True Self
When you made those initial decisions, you lacked the life experience needed to shape choices serving your future self. Some of these choices may now hinder your true nature.
Remember, you are the director, creator, editor, and actor of your reality. Who do you want to be?
Conclusion
Understanding identity formation can't circumvent the process since we are, by design, meaning-making beings. And that very design is perfect, just like you. There is a lot we can learn from the honesty and simplicity of a child.
