Courage
Title:
Courage
Summary:
“Courage is being scared to death?"but saddling up anyway.” ?" John Wayne
Article Body:
Courage is often seen as the hallmark of a hero, but it’s not a mysterious force reserved for a select few. Many perceive courage as vague because they lack understanding of its true nature. This lack of understanding is often rooted in a deficiency of knowledge. As Socrates observed, many people are unaware of their own ignorance, living in continual fear.
Fear manifests in many ways: fear of death, fear of life, fear of nightmares, and even fear of dreams. Most people follow others because of their lack of self-confidence, living in constant fear. They admire those who show them how to overcome fear, yet attack anyone who reminds them of their own insecurities. This is a base instinct of human nature.
So, what is fear? It’s often a misperception of the unknown, a negative twist on reality rather than reality itself. A useful acronym for FEAR is False Evidence Appearing Real. These are self-created worries and doubts about events that haven’t even occurred. As Shakespeare wisely noted, our doubts betray us, often causing us to miss out on potential victories simply because we fear trying.
The root cause of fear is ignorance, and consequently, knowledge is its antidote. Ralph Waldo Emerson emphasized this, suggesting that heroes are those who embrace learning. They know what they don’t know and are eager to learn from anyone, regardless of their status. Leaders are aware of their potential, whereas followers overlook it. True courage and self-confidence stem from knowledge and self-awareness.
It’s important to understand that no one is entirely fearless. Even great heroes like Nelson Mandela have spoken about feeling fear, emphasizing that courage is about conquering it. He famously stated, “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”
This insight is discussed in "Psychology of the Hero Soul" by Sharif Khan, a book aimed at awakening the hero within us all and reigniting our passion for greatness.
