In today's fast-paced world, every business is clamoring for attention. We live in an era overwhelmed by communication. Marketing experts Al Ries and Jack Trout identified this "overcommunicated" society over 25 years ago?"and that was before the explosion of the internet and smartphones. So, how can you effectively capture your audience's attention?
Consider why phone companies use frogs, dimes, monkeys, beavers, and geckos in their advertisements. The reason is simple: you can't visually perceive phone service.
To stand out, you need to create vivid images with your words. Don’t present yourself in plain black and white like a kid’s coloring book. Instead, grab a metaphorical crayon and color yourself in!
People often ask me, "What if I don't have any color?" But everyone has it; sometimes, you just need to dig a little deeper to find it.
Take, for example, a client who came to me a few years ago. She needed to deliver a speech about her Speaker's Bureau to a group of professional speakers. Nervous and uncertain, she feared she wouldn’t connect with her audience. She needed to inject her presentation with some color to make an impact.
During our conversation, I discovered she grew up on a tomato farm. As a child, she helped her dad pick tomatoes and take them to market. I suggested she could use this as an analogy for her work with speakers: some are seedlings, some are still green, others are ripe and ready, while some are simply past their prime. Her speech was a success, and people lined up to speak with her afterward. She had uncovered her color!
If you're struggling to find your color, seek help from a friend or hire a coach. Ask yourself questions about your childhood dreams, hobbies, or anything quirky and unique about you?"even if it seems unrelated to your business. These connections can be made later. When I was a lawyer, I had a mug that read, "Lawyers and Painters Can Turn Black Into White." Now, I show people how to transform black and white into vibrant color.
Think of your words as paintbrushes. So, when you speak or write, pick up a crayon or two and color yourself in!
