Article:

Are you an avid reader of self-help books but find that nothing changes? Have you experimented with different therapies, yet still feel unhappy, anxious, and alone? Do you often have the answers for others but not for yourself?

The core issue might be your focus on problem-solving instead of discovering what truly serves your highest good and taking constructive action. You'll remain stuck when your emphasis is on fixing rather than learning and doing.

Many individuals become information addicts, endlessly reading in hopes of finding the right solution. However, even when they stumble upon something that could help, they fail to act on it. They stay locked in their minds, trying to figure it out instead of taking necessary actions. It’s akin to reading about exercising while never actually working out.

This is a common pattern I encounter with my clients. The Six Step Inner Bonding process we teach is a powerful way to get unstuck and heal underlying issues. Many read my books and even have sessions with me, yet they resist practicing the process. They can articulate the theory and even teach it to others, but because they aren’t practicing, nothing changes.

Take Jonathan, for example. He sought my help due to his depression over financial issues. Despite being an avid reader, nothing seemed to work for him. His business and marriage were both crumbling.

During our first session, I noticed his relentless negative self-talk: “Nothing will ever change for me. I’ll always be a loser. What works for others won’t work for me. I’m destined to end up on the streets. It’s always been this way for me.” No wonder he felt anxious and depressed!

I asked him to imagine saying these things to a child.

“I would never say that to him?"it would scare him.”

Yet, this is exactly how he speaks to his own inner child, constantly terrifying himself with negativity.

“I know. I treat myself horribly, but I can’t stop. I’ve read your books, and I understand the Inner Bonding process, but I don’t think it can help me.”

“Have you tried it?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“I don’t believe it will help. I don’t think it will work.”

Jonathan longs for a magic pill to fix him and avoids the actions that could help. His negative self-talk is a form of control, a misguided belief that self-criticism will drive change. He’s as addicted to his negativity as someone might be to alcohol, but it’s no solution.

Jonathan resists acknowledging that his negative self-talk fuels his problems. He doesn’t want to admit he’s creating the life he doesn’t want, nor does he recognize that his anxiety and other painful feelings are signals from his inner guidance system that he’s off track. He avoids taking responsibility for his thoughts and actions, or lack thereof.

Until Jonathan chooses to take responsibility for his thoughts and actions, he will remain stuck in resistance, trapped in a victim mentality.
