High school seniors often think they’re nearly grown up, poised on the brink of the real world. Teachers usually treat them with this understanding, as they prepare for college and future careers. But there was something special about Miss Barnett’s Advanced Composition class. It wasn’t about the credits; it was about the experience and the connection with her.
Students would proudly wear a gold star on their foreheads or enjoy a Tootsie Pop for participating in her class. Miss Barnett taught us not only how to write but also how to think. She spoke to us as equals, instilling confidence and preparing us for the world beyond school. Every student mattered to her, from the future valedictorian to those struggling with writing. In Miss Barnett’s eyes, we were all equally important.
Despite never marrying, Miss Barnett often joked about waiting for Efrem Zimbalist Jr., whom she described as the most handsome man alive. We were clueless then, but those who later saw his photograph could appreciate her admiration for the actor.
Reflecting on Miss Barnett’s influence, it’s not specific writing rules that stick with me, though I do remember her disdain for "a lot" and her unique pronunciation of "separate." Her true gift was sparking a lifelong love for words and writing.
In a historic moment, our class chose Miss Barnett to speak at our commencement, honoring her in a way no teacher had been before. It was a testament to the deep respect and affection we held for her. Sadly, she passed away a few years later.
Miss Barnett may not have had the conventional markers of success: wealth, a luxurious home, or the perfect spouse (Efrem never did show up). Yet, her life was rich with joy and fulfillment through her work. She poured her heart into teaching, and her students returned that love tenfold.
