Determined to stamp out these island pirates, King William entrusted a young lawyer from The Hague with this daunting mission.
"I want you to clean up that island," was the king’s command?"a formidable task for someone just in their twenties. Appointed as the island's mayor and later a judge, the young attorney set out to transform the island. Within a year, he established a court of law and began his mission of justice.
Despite the island's grim and barren landscape, the young mayor saw potential. "An ugly place is ugly only because it is not beautiful," he mused, determined to transform the island into a place of beauty.
Calling his council together, he declared, "We must have trees." While the practical seafaring men hesitated, citing more urgent needs, the mayor was undeterred. "Very well," he said, "I will do it myself." He planted the first hundred trees the island had ever seen.
Skeptical islanders warned him, "Too cold; the harsh winds will kill them all."
"Then I will plant more," he replied undaunted. For the fifty years he lived there, he planted trees annually. He also donated land to create public parks and squares, enhancing them with shrubs and plants each spring.
Moistened by the salty mist, the trees thrived. The North Sea is turbulent, and there was no refuge for storm-driven birds across its expanse. Many bird carcasses littered the sea’s surface. But as the trees grew, they provided shelter. Exhausted birds found refuge and sang in gratitude.
Soon, the island was renowned for its rare and beautiful birds, attracting visitors from the mainland and around the world. The birds claimed part of the island, aptly named "Eggland," for laying their eggs and raising their young. This vibrant avian sanctuary, teeming with hundreds of thousands of bird eggs, became a marvel admired by ornithologists globally.
And so, through determination and vision, a once-feared island was transformed into a haven of beauty and life.
