Agoraphobia: Four Changes I Made to Begin Healing
For over twenty years, I struggled with agoraphobia. I tried countless treatments, both conventional and alternative, but nothing seemed to help my panic disorder and anxiety. Some treatments even worsened my symptoms.
My journey began in 1985 with panic attacks that developed into a travel phobia. Gradually, my safe zone shrank until I was nearly housebound. I consulted homeopaths at different times to seek relief, but nothing seemed effective. However, they both told me something that stuck: there’s a “time for healing.” Initially, I misunderstood this, thinking there was a predetermined moment for recovery. It was only later, as I began to heal, that I understood their meaning.
I realized they referred to reaching a point in life suitable for healing. Unaware at the time, certain aspects of my life were blocking my recovery. Here are the crucial changes I needed to make:
1. Overcoming Resentment
I was deeply resentful about my agoraphobia. I couldn’t understand why it happened to me. Letting go of this resentment was my first step.
2. Accepting the Reality
For years, I denied my condition, hoping it would vanish on its own. Even close friends didn’t know the extent of my struggle. Acknowledging my need for help was critical.
3. Letting Go of Guilt
I had a habit of overcommitting, even when travel was involved, and often canceled last minute. The guilt from disappointing others was overwhelming. I realized I needed to prioritize my well-being.
4. Stopping Self-Medication
I began by having a few drinks to calm my nerves, which escalated into daily drinking. This only led to depression. Eliminating alcohol was essential.

Change was necessary. I quit drinking and stopped overpromising. If invited somewhere, I stated I would try to attend but asked others not to plan around me. I accepted my situation, viewing it as a puzzle to solve. I became honest about my agoraphobia.
Soon, I noticed improvements. My depression lifted, guilt from missed engagements disappeared, and I stopped fooling myself about magical recovery. Resentment was replaced with determination.
These changes didn’t cure my agoraphobia, panic attacks, or anxiety, but they reduced stress significantly. This prepared me for recovery, and right on cue, I discovered the system that helped me fully overcome agoraphobia and its related issues.
