Unleashing Joy and Passion in Everyday Life
Have you ever considered how much beauty, joy, and creativity are missing each day because so many abandon their passions for the "serious" demands of life?
A Powerful Encounter
Recently, I had the pleasure of seeing Groovelily perform "Striking 12" in New York City. Before the show, Valerie, the lead singer and violinist, shared an unforgettable story. She had once performed with her father to celebrate his life's work as a cantor. After their performance, an elderly woman approached Valerie, sharing her own story. As a child in Germany, she loved playing the violin, but when her family fled the Nazis, they couldn’t bring her violin to America. She grew up, started a family, and while her son became a musician, she never played again. Clutching Valerie’s hands, she implored, "Keep on playing."
This story deeply resonates with me. As an amateur musician, I often find excuses not to play. It reminds me of the immense joy and creativity lost when we sideline our passions for life’s "serious" demands.
Reflect on Your Passions
Take a moment to consider:
- What activities did you love as a child or young adult? Are you still engaged in any?
- What were your dreams growing up?
- When do you feel most joyful and in the flow? When was the last time you did this?
If you’re like many, the excuses are familiar:
- "I don’t have time."
- "I have more important things to do."
- "Now that I have obligations, it's impossible."
But imagine if you could reconnect with what you love. What if being a musician was about sharing music? You can start now. Pick up an old instrument, volunteer, or share your music with others.
If you craved the thrill of sports, there are still ways to compete and stay fit. Athletes in their 70s, 80s, and 90s often display more spirit than younger professionals. Friends of mine with demanding lives regularly participate in triathlons. If they can do it, so can you.
Embrace Joy and Play
You deserve joy and play. Life can be serious, but allowing yourself moments of passion can invigorate all aspects of life. Just a small amount of time dedicated to what feeds your soul can enhance everything else.
This month, find your "violin." Dust off your guitar, tennis racket, paintbrush, or notebook. Grant yourself the freedom to rediscover passion and joy. It's time to play.
