Discomfort Is Key to Success

Summary

Many people are unaware of what it truly means to commit to their dreams and goals because they often abandon their commitments when faced with discomfort. Achieving success requires stepping out of our comfort zones.

Article

Most people struggle to commit fully to their life dreams and goals, often because they unconsciously add a caveat: “…as long as it’s not uncomfortable.” They don't realize that discomfort is an essential part of the commitment process and contributes to personal growth.

When we commit to a goal, we activate an intrinsic goal-achievement mechanism that begins to align our actions and circumstances toward that aspiration. It’s like telling your inner self, “I want this,” and your mind replies, “Alright, let’s make it happen.” This mechanism employs various methods to teach us what we need to know or to clear obstacles from our path.

Sometimes, learning these lessons is pleasant; you might stumble upon a helpful article or receive valuable advice from a friend. Other times, the lessons are less enjoyable, perhaps coming from a stern boss or an unexpected health issue.

This mechanism also identifies and removes obstacles. If your goal is to buy a new car, you might receive a great offer for your old one. Conversely, your current car might break down, forcing you to make a change.

To achieve new goals, we must expand our comfort zones to include them. The larger the goal, the more we must stretch ourselves, often through uncomfortable experiences. When people don’t understand that discomfort is part of the growth process, they may use it as an excuse to give up, never reaching their desired outcomes. Learning to endure discomfort is crucial for personal development.

This idea is illustrated by the old milling process, where small stones, known as grist, were added to wheat. The friction between the stones and the grain during grinding transformed the wheat into fine flour. Without the grist, the process would fail. Similarly, discomfort is the grist in the mill of life, essential for refining our abilities and insights.

Embracing discomfort as a natural part of your journey is vital. It not only expands your comfort zone but also prepares you for the success you desire.
