Survivors
On January 12th, our community in Southwest Missouri was struck by a severe ice storm. Like many others, my family struggled to endure the aftermath.
For five to ten days, most of us were without electricity, and some even longer. Many faced a lack of water due to electric-dependent wells. This week, life began returning to normal, a testament to our resilience as survivors.
Talking with neighbors, I learned how others managed. Some had fireplaces, others relied on kerosene heaters, and a few secured generators. Tragically, some lives were lost to fumes.
We had a wood-burning fireplace that hadn’t been used in three years, and no wood. Desperate on the first day, I asked a neighbor for some, and he generously provided a wheelbarrow full. Before running out, we found wood for sale at $70 per day, though it was large and green. My son tirelessly split it each day.
To contain heat, we hung blankets over windows and doorways, spending six days in our living room. The close quarters tested our patience, and I often wondered if our relationships would withstand the strain.
We lost most of our food due to the inability to cook, and ice-laden branches fell like fireworks, causing damage. One limb pierced our roof, and another destroyed our patio cover. Power surges ruined our phone and answering machine, raising concerns about mounting expenses.
Our trees suffered greatly, branches scattered across the ground. We’ve already removed a large shade tree that wouldn’t have survived, and others may face the same fate.
Despite the anxiety, stress, and loss of modern conveniences, I’m proud to say that my family emerged strong. I sincerely hope we never endure another week like that again.
