Overcoming My Fear of Heights in a Hot Air Balloon
Summary:
I’ve always been terrified of heights, yet I keep seeking adrenaline-fueled experiences. From glass elevators to Ferris wheels and revolving restaurants, I’ve willingly faced my fears, even overcoming my fear of flying. But hot air ballooning was a new challenge.
Facing My Fears:
Hot air ballooning isn’t quite like flying in a plane. There’s no food service, no movies, and definitely no cabin pressure. It’s just a large balloon, a basket, a gas burner, and a group of excited people. This isn’t flying; it’s more like peacefully floating above the earth. Why I chose to venture on this hot air balloon ride, I’ll never understand.
The flight was booked under perfect weather conditions. We arrived at the launch site on a cool, crisp morning before sunrise. Other passengers were already present, eagerly awaiting our pre-flight briefing.
Confronting the Challenge:
As we prepared for takeoff, fear consumed me. My heart raced, and it was hard to breathe. I fought to keep my panic at bay, trying not to dampen anyone's excitement. When the ropes were finally released and the balloon began its ascent, I felt weak, my knees like jelly. Trapped, I silently screamed as we rose higher.
Finding Calm:
To manage my panic, I remembered to breathe and centered myself, thanks to meditation practices. I focused on the beauty of the purple hills on the horizon and the serene sky, only disrupted by the burner’s soft roaring.Curiosity took over as I noticed the heat from the flames and began probing my fear. I asked myself, “What’s important about this fear?” and answered until there was nothing left to ask.
I discovered my fears stemmed from the lack of a jet engine, steering wheel, seat belts, or an escape chute. We were in a basket attached to a balloon!
Finding Peace:
I realized that:- The likelihood of disaster was nearly non-existent.
- The present moment was where I felt safest.
- I could envision myself enjoying a champagne breakfast afterward, sharing my story.
- This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I should savor.
The captain’s expertise reassured me, and I trusted the equipment after inspecting it. Additionally, a vehicle was following us below.
Taking deep breaths, I reconnected with peace, grateful for my years of meditation practice.
Embracing the Experience:
Finally, I was able to enjoy the breathtaking experience. The tranquility above the earth at sunrise, with lush hills rolling beneath us, was heavenly.Focusing on the present, controlling my breath, and centering myself greatly helped ease my anxiety. Posing questions about my fears uncovered their roots.
Try asking yourself, “What is important about this?” when faced with fear. You might discover something surprising about yourself.
