Once Saved, Always Saved?

A Personal Reflection

For a long time, I believed that once I was saved, I would always remain so. This belief was partly rooted in the scripture from Romans 8:38, where Paul declares:

"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

I interpreted this to mean that I would always be loved and saved. But what changed my perspective?

On October 25, 2002, I experienced the heartbreaking loss of giving birth to a stillborn child at full term. During the months of grief that followed, I spent countless hours in deep prayer, grappling with the situation. During one intense moment, God transported me back to the hospital, where I had held my lifeless child.

In that moment, He revealed something profound: the love I felt for my child was akin to how He feels for us, His children.

In this prayerful state ?" more like an outpouring of my soul, flat on my face and sobbing ?" I shared my heart with God:

"God, when I whispered in my baby's ear, she couldn’t hear me. When I said 'I love you,' she didn’t acknowledge me. Her eyes never opened to see me. I had everything she needed ?" food, clothes, shelter, toys ?" but none of it mattered because I couldn't take her home."

The Lord, in His wisdom, helped me understand that He, too, has children who turn a deaf ear and blind eye to Him. They are provided with everything they need, yet they do not recognize Him; they remain dead in their sins. He cannot welcome them home to heaven because they are spiritually dead.

Returning to the scripture, I recognized that indeed, nothing can separate us from God's love. However, His unwavering love doesn't change the fact that some people choose to remain in sin. God is just, and as stated in His word, "the wages of sin is death."

Perhaps at one time, these individuals did hear Him and were grafted into the vine, with us as its branches. But if they shut their eyes and ears again and fall back into unbelief, He can cut them off. They cannot enter heaven ?" they are spiritually dead.

The good news is that God is forgiving. His Word assures us: "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life."

This journey has deepened my understanding of faith, love, and the nature of divine forgiveness. God’s love is unfailing, but it requires our response and acceptance to bring us eternal life.
