Let’s Synchronize Our Watches
Introduction
“On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have appointed watchmen; all day and all night they will never keep silent. You who remind the Lord, take no rest for yourselves.” - Isaiah 62:6
Recently, I experienced a profound reminder from the Lord about the importance of intercessory prayer, a lesson I had long forgotten. If you've been in a similar place, you'll understand. Spiritual learning can be slow for me, and I often need repeated lessons before they truly resonate.
A Prompt to Pray
I felt uneasy about a dear sister in Christ, prompting me to pray for her. Yet, nothing appeared wrong, and no urgent need for prayer was made known to me. Doubts surfaced, telling me, "You're imagining things," or "There are more pressing matters to pray about."
Despite these objections, I have learned through experience that it never hurts to pray for someone's protection or peace. I've come to recognize that sometimes the voice discouraging me from praying is not my own but from another source?"one that would rather I remained silent.
This time, my sense of urgency grew stronger, leading me to ask my wife, Chris, to join me in prayer. Though initially skeptical, we prayed together, driven by an indefinable need.
Discovering the Purpose
Later that day, my curiosity got the better of me, and I called my friend. While she did express a prayer need, she assured me everything was generally fine. Far from being disappointed that no crisis existed, I was relieved and grateful for God's prompting. Extra prayer is always beneficial, and the call revealed a request I wouldn’t have known otherwise.
My friend suggested something intriguing: that my prayer could have been preventative, rather than reactive. This pushed me toward deeper spiritual exploration, leading me to revisit a book by Dutch Sheets, “The Beginner’s Guide to Intercession.” When I opened it, I landed on a chapter about proactive intercession.
Sheets writes that too often we react to events rather than proactively praying against potential spiritual threats. He refers to this as "watchman intercession," a proactive stance against spiritual adversities.
The Role of the Watchman
Isaiah 62:6 and other scriptures highlight the importance of vigilance in intercession. Ephesians 6:18 urges us to "pray at all times in the Spirit" and be "on the alert" for fellow believers. Similarly, 1 Peter 5:8 warns us to be watchful, as our adversary, the devil, is always seeking someone to devour.
Sheets mentions that intercession shouldn’t only be reactive. God offers us more than just damage control; He can warn us in advance of spiritual attacks, allowing us to build protective boundaries through prayer.
In his book, Sheets describes this as creating spiritual boundaries: a declaration that we won't allow any interlopers into our lives. Psalm 91:1-4 beautifully supports this idea, promising divine protection for those who trust in God.
A Call to Action
It’s important to acknowledge that not all adversities are direct attacks from Satan. Sometimes, they result from human error, the fallen state of our world, or other causes. Nevertheless, watchman intercession provides protection from both spiritual and worldly adversities.
We are indeed our brother’s and sister's keeper. We have the opportunity to preserve lives, destinies, and health through prayer. By heeding warnings and taking action, we can prevent the serpent from invading our spiritual gardens.
Prayer and Conclusion
Here is a prayer from Sheets’ book:
“Father, I accept Your assignment in my life to keep the serpent out of my garden. His schemes will not succeed against my home and family. I stand as a doorkeeper for my children, declaring no compromise will enter their lives. Your promise is that they will be taught by You, and great will be their peace. Establish them in righteousness and keep them far from oppression and fear. Holy Spirit, guide me to be sensitive to Your voice and alert me to Satan’s schemes. Thank you, Father, in Jesus’ name. Amen.”
As members of the body of Christ, we have the privilege to lift each other up in prayer. It is gracious of Him to alert us when others are in need, prompting us to intercede. You can stand in the gap for me, and I can do the same for you.
A Final Reflection
Heavenly Father, there is much to learn to live the abundant life You promised us. I must remain vigilant, not only for myself and my family but for my brothers and sisters in Christ.
And that, dear friends, is what I've learned in my spiritual journey this past week.
With love,
Brother Bill
