Article
In moments of despair, when challenges seem insurmountable, many of us seek solace by leaving our burdens to God. “Let God handle it,” we say, surrendering to divine will when we feel incapable of finding solutions ourselves. This response is common, especially among those facing terminal illness or other life-threatening situations. Conversations with individuals in these circumstances often reveal a deep reliance on faith.
However, there are other scenarios in which we inadvertently leave issues to God. Consider the rampant poverty and sickness in the world. Many people, overwhelmed by their own struggles, become indifferent to the suffering around them. While not inherently malicious, this detachment leads many to place these issues in God’s hands without conscious intention to help. Some, like Mother Teresa, choose a different path, dedicating their lives to alleviating suffering and becoming beacons of compassion.
Yet, there's a darker side to leaving things to God, one that borders on cruelty. Take, for example, a mother abandoning her newborn on the streets. Perhaps due to societal pressure or personal challenges, she decides to leave the child to God’s mercy instead of addressing the situation herself. This act, performed under the guise of faith, raises questions about responsibility and humanity. Why does she prioritize her reputation over her child’s welfare? Such actions do not please God but rather reflect a misunderstanding of faith’s true nature.
The question arises: why don’t individuals in such situations seek God’s guidance to face their challenges instead of abandoning responsibility? Imagine a mother praying for strength and guidance to raise her child despite the difficulties. Such prayers reflect true reliance on divine support, contrasting sharply with those who walk away from their responsibilities.
Many people fail to entrust their own struggles to God’s care fully. They seek medical treatment when sick and work for their sustenance, indicating a lack of complete surrender to faith. Yet, paradoxically, they abandon the helpless to divine intervention, showcasing selective reliance on God.
Leaving a loved one in their time of need, claiming to entrust them to God, is a heartbreaking act. It leaves behind shattered lives and exemplifies ultimate betrayal. Such cruelty, masked as faith, is neither justifiable nor forgivable.
In essence, while leaving matters to God can be an expression of faith, it becomes problematic when used to evade responsibility. True faith involves active participation and compassion, not abandonment.
