Our thoughts are fleeting; they come and go without our control. For instance, can we instantly stop feeling sad when sadness arises? The answer is clearly no.
The 'sense of self' gives us the illusion of personal decision-making and action-taking. But is this truly the case?
In my view, the ego or personality lacks individual free will. This sense of self is an illusion created by the seamless flow and connection of thoughts, which gives rise to coherence and perceived personal agency. In deep meditation, when thoughts are observed closely, it becomes clear that there is no separate observer of these thoughts. Each thought observes its predecessor in a rapid sequence, noticeable only with deep clarity.
I believe that true free will resides with the soul or higher self, which holds the deeper impulses, intentions, and desires for the personality. Interestingly, part of this higher self may lack a distinct 'sense of self.'
The 'sense of self' is merely a fragment of the vast field of consciousness. It's not the initiator but rather part of what's being realized.
This realization doesn't suggest that everything is predetermined. Quite the opposite?"the visible (our conscious self/personality) collaborates with the invisible to bring potentials into physical reality. Everything perceived in the physical world is, in a sense, already realized.
