What Does It Mean to Self-Improve?
Exploring the Essence of Self-Improvement
Self-improvement has become a prominent focus in recent years. As I've been writing and sharing articles, I've observed the growing presence of the Self-Improvement category?"something that wasn't there before. This progression is encouraging and reflects a widespread interest in personal growth.
Understanding Self-Improvement
What does it truly mean to self-improve? What aspects are we enhancing? And which "self" are we focusing on improving?
Each of us possesses two selves: our wounded self and our core Self. Our core Self is our true essence?"our passion, joy, creativity, and innate talents. It's the pure part of us that thrives when loved and valued. This Self seeks to flourish by acquiring the skills necessary to express itself fully.
Conversely, if our core Self isn't nurtured as needed, we develop an alternative self?"our wounded or ego self. This self arises in a bid to control how we receive love and manage pain, forming around absorbed false beliefs that limit our core Self.
Healing vs. Improving
The concept of self-improvement can be misleading. Our goal isn't to enhance our wounded self, which engages in harmful behaviors to seek love or avoid pain. Instead, this aspect requires healing.
Improvement and healing are distinct. While we can develop skills in areas like sports, art, music, or health, true progress sometimes necessitates healing underlying fears and false beliefs. These hidden barriers can lead to anxiety, depression, and stress, blocking genuine self-expression.
The Path to True Growth
Sometimes, self-improvement involves honing a skill. Other times, it requires a deeper healing journey. For instance, if food addictions mask unhealed pain, simple dietary changes may not suffice. Healing the root causes can pave the way for true improvement.
If you're striving to improve but feel stuck, unhealed pain and limiting beliefs might be hindering your progress. It's effortless to advance when obstacles don't stand in the way. However, old beliefs about self-worth may prevent you from taking loving actions for yourself.
Embracing Healing
All efforts at self-improvement remain unsatisfying if entrenched beliefs limit your true, core Self. If you're struggling, consider embarking on a healing process to overcome fears and restrictions. Doing so can unlock the full potential to enhance every aspect of your life.
Healing these barriers will open the door to genuine improvement, allowing you to live a more fulfilled and authentic life.
