Tuning Out for Success
For countless generations, people have debated what it takes to succeed in life: honesty, energy, relationships, fear management?"you name it. Throughout my life, I have pursued these answers, cherishing the insights I’ve gained along the way.
Back in July 2005, I revisited Longview, Washington, where I had spent nine years raising my daughter. When we departed, we left much of our home stored away, planning to return once we settled in Los Angeles. As I rummaged through the storage units, a book tumbled out?"a near-missed treasure. It was MASTERY, written by my old friend Tim Piering.
Tim Piering is an extraordinary individual. A husband, father, engineer, Marine officer, and a martial arts black belt, Tim has a profound talent for teaching and coaching. In the '80s, I was privileged to be part of a group where he shared advanced neurolinguistic and hypnotic techniques that still seem ahead of their time.
As I held the book, grateful I hadn’t discarded it, I stumbled upon a page that revealed:
1. The importance of clearly defined, written goals.
2. The ability to act despite the negative inner voice we all possess.
This revelation struck me as the most concise expression of success I had ever encountered. It brought back the memories of how much I owe to these simple truths.
The Power of Written Goals
We’re often told to set goals, but writing them down multiplies our chances of success by tenfold. There’s a mysterious magic in writing goals. If you try it, you’ll feel the difference. Unlike vague dreams, written goals form a contract between your conscious and subconscious mind?"a bridge between thought and reality.
Understanding the "Radio Voice"
The "Radio Voice" is that doubting sound in your head. It questions your ability, suggesting distractions instead of focusing on important tasks. Want to write? It tells you your work is worthless. Want to get fit? It insists it's too late. Dreaming of a fulfilling relationship? It claims all the good ones are taken.
Don’t think you have one? Try sitting in silence for two minutes.
Listening to the constant chatter, you’ll recognize: you are not the voice. You are the listener. This distinction is vital. The Radio Voice consists of echoes from teachers, parents, peers, and past experiences. But remember, it often lies.
Silencing the Voice
Globally, there are thousands of meditation techniques designed to quiet this voice of doubt. You must find ways to ignore or calm these voices to achieve success. One effective method is engaging in physical flow activities like Tai Chi, Yoga, or jogging, where mental focus transcends distractions.
Meditation can also help, whether through observing a candle flame or simply focusing on your breath. Initially, the voices will resist, trying to distract you, but persistence is key.
Achieving Flow
This mental and physical practice enhances your ability to maintain flow?"relaxed concentration even under pressure. Artists, inventors, and writers often experience this when they’re so engrossed in their work that they’re oblivious to the world.
Tim Piering’s teachings have reminded me of the importance of these principles. Success often hinges on your ability to maintain concentration and shut out distractions. Embrace this state and unlock your potential.
Thank you, Tim, for this invaluable lesson.
