Thinking About Thinking - Part 1 of 2

How Much Time Do You Spend Thinking?

Ever wondered how much time you actually spend thinking? I’m not talking about the thinking you do while commuting, exercising, or in the shower. I mean the activities that occur when you’re quietly reflecting in your office, den, or garden. No distractions, just you and your thoughts.

The Importance of Intentional Thinking

For many, truly dedicating time to think feels like a luxury. You're juggling customers, employees, investors?"there's always something demanding your attention. In our action-oriented society, doing multiple things at once seems the norm. But thinking, the kind that drives strategic growth and innovation, is indispensable.

Thinking is crucial for developing intellectual capital, inventing strategy, and navigating the fast-paced changes in our world. Yet, it is one of the most challenging and overlooked activities.

Two Types of Thinking

Thinking can be categorized into two broad types. There’s the free-form style like daydreaming and meditating, which we’ll explore in the next column. Then, there’s disciplined thinking?"asking questions and seeking answers. This article focuses on the latter, practical side of thinking.

The Process of Inquiry

When I contemplate the nature of thinking, it always begins with a question. "What is thinking?" leads to more inquiries like, "How does my mind function when I try to think?" It’s a cycle of questioning, discovering that at every stage, it’s all about asking the right questions.

However, it’s not just about asking questions but also considering potential answers. Hence, thinking can be defined as: asking questions and pondering possible answers.

Beyond Seeking Definitive Answers

Instead of seeking a single answer, the process of inquiry keeps questions open, continually peeling back layers to unearth deeper questions and insights. This approach is akin to peeling an artichoke to reach its heart. You delve deeper until you uncover profound understanding.

Focused Questioning

To think effectively about an issue, start by focusing your mind with relevant questions. These can be tackled one by one or stacked together to address collectively when the time feels right. Sometimes, answers will lead to further questions, continuing the cycle of exploration.

Knowing When to Stop

You’ll know when to pause questioning when you’ve gathered enough ideas to illuminate your initial inquiry. You might set a time limit or aim to generate a specific number of answers. Alternatively, you can continue the process indefinitely, seeking the "right" answer or continuously engaging in exploration.

Developing Answers Authentically

What truly sets thinking apart is the commitment to devising authentic and responsible answers rather than defaulting to "I don't know." Sometimes, you have no idea what the answer is?"so create one. Trust your subconscious and past experiences. That leap of creativity is, indeed, a vital part of thinking.

Questions Worth Asking

While I can’t prescribe the exact questions you should ask, consider these 16 strategic questions to stimulate your thinking process. Adapt them to suit your context:

1. What is my purpose?
2. What do I want that I don’t already have?
3. What am I mistaking for the real thing that could make a genuine difference?
4. In what ways am I effective or not?
5. What crucial tasks are being neglected?
6. What unmet needs exist in our market that we could fulfill?
7. How might people prefer to receive what we offer?
8. What should we stop doing?
9. What would bring us happiness?
10. What have I overlooked?
11. When will we be ready?
12. How hard will we try to make things easier?
13. What challenges aren’t we facing because we don’t know how?
14. What is the most important thing now and next month?

My hope is these questions ignite your thinking and propel your journey into deeper reflections.
