The Last Day of Work
Embrace Joy in Your Career
We are blessed every moment of our lives, and the key to enriching our work life is embracing it as a source of enjoyment.
Enjoyment as the End of Work
Confucius famously said that when you love what you do, you'll never work another day in your life. While seemingly just another quote, such words can shape our mindset and influence how we approach our careers. They serve as inspiration for ourselves and others.
This concept holds true if you're open to it. Some may argue their job can't be fun, and with that mindset, they may be right.
Work as Art
Think of work as art?"it requires scientific knowledge, but how you apply that knowledge is your unique artistic expression. Your job description is a blank canvas, waiting for your personal touch.
In my previous article, "Career Proofing," I mentioned my friend Clifford Lucas from ABN AMRO, who views work as an art. For him, every task is an opportunity to create something extraordinary.
Break Free from Routine
For many in the corporate world, the initial excitement of milestones like the first promotion or project success fades. It’s easy to fall into a rut, but remember, today is the first day of the rest of your life. Live it and paint it with enthusiasm.
A routine can feel like a rut, and the difference between a rut and a grave is only the depth. Infuse life into your work by treating it as an artistic endeavor.
Design, Don’t Plan
Here's an unconventional idea: stop planning. Yes, you read that right. Planning can be tedious and uninspired. Instead, focus on designing your future. Design involves creativity and vision, transforming the mundane into something vibrant.
When you’re designing your future, don't just recreate old ideas. Instead, remove constraints, unleash your passion, and approach your work with the creativity of an artist and the determination of an athlete.
Action and Inspiration
Once your design is ready, it's time for action. A well-conceived design should ignite inspiration and readiness. Take initiatives akin to a bold cricketing maneuver or a unique artistic creation?"unconventional, yet filled with passion.
On the workplace stage, outperform your previous self. Surprise yourself every day, and let each day mark the end of "working" in the conventional sense.
A Final Thought
As James Allen, the essayist, said: "Work joyfully and peacefully, knowing that right thoughts and right efforts will inevitably bring about right results."
So, don’t just work today. Design your future. Your last working day was yesterday?"it’s all about perspective.
