The Gift Only You Can Give
Deciding what gift to give to those closest to us, whether it's a spouse, child, or a dear friend, can be daunting. However, throughout my years of gifting, two have profoundly resonated with people, leaving lasting impressions on any occasion.
Gift One: The Written Affirmation
Take a moment to write down or type what you genuinely see in the other person:
- How they make a difference in your life.
- The impact they have on others.
- Their unique talents and gifts.
- The potential you see in them.
- What you appreciate about them and why.
Write this on special paper that reflects their personality. Present it in an envelope or frame it for them to hang as a reminder during tough times. I often add a ribbon that says, "Who You Are Makes A Difference."
Gift Two: The Gift of Listening
We often listen half-heartedly, preoccupied with our thoughts or anticipating what they'll say. This can make people feel undervalued and unheard.
Many express, "If only someone would just listen to me." People yearn for a compassionate ear?"a sounding board to genuinely hear them.
To Give This Gift:
1. Let them know you’re there to listen.
2. Choose a time when you're not rushed.
3. Eliminate distractions:
- Turn off the TV, radio, and cell phone.
- Ensure you're not too tired.
4. Face them and maintain eye contact.
5. Show signs you're actively listening.
6. Only offer advice if they ask.
7. Encourage them by saying, "Tell me more about that."
8. Ask, "Is there anything else?"
9. Resist the urge to respond immediately; jot down notes if necessary.
By genuinely listening, you'll be amazed at what you can learn. Often, you'll discover things you never knew about your loved ones, breaking assumptions and deepening your understanding. This process has healed relationships and brings immense joy to both parties.
In our fast-paced lives, we frequently overlook the importance of showing those close to us that they truly matter. Sadly, it's easier to point out negatives, leading some to think that’s all we see in them, which can contribute to feelings of depression or isolation.
These two gifts can greatly enhance communication and strengthen relationships. The rewards are immense, and the insights gained are profoundly transformative.
