The Impact of Living with a Stutter
Overview
Struggling with speech issues is more common than you might think. Over one percent of the UK population experiences stuttering or stammering. This article explores how stuttering can affect everyday life.
Understanding Stuttering
As someone who has overcome a stutter?"often referred to as a stammer?"I can share that it significantly impacted my life for 18 years. People experience stuttering differently, but here are some challenges I faced:
- Introducing people
- Ordering food or drinks
- Speaking on the phone
- Attending interviews
- Trying to attract a girlfriend
- Socializing with friends and family
In many ways, my stutter felt like a disability, leading me to settle for less and making life a constant struggle. I was always searching for ways to overcome it.
Family and Social Perception
Surprisingly, even my family and friends didn’t fully grasp how stuttering affected me until I opened up about it, leaving them quite shocked.
Therapy and Determination
Starting speech therapy at around four or five, I struggled with feeling misunderstood. Therapists, who hadn’t experienced stuttering themselves, offered group and individual sessions focusing on techniques like speaking slowly and deep breathing.
But I never resigned myself to having a speech impediment forever. At 22, I became determined to achieve fluency, bolstered by outstanding support from family and friends who practiced techniques with me.
Achieving Fluency
After six months of refining strategies and another five months of integrating them into my daily speech, I achieved fluency.
Helping Others
Now, I help others reach fluency through personalized speech courses in Birmingham. Participants leave with a DVD and written guide to reinforce what they’ve learned. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at info@stammering-stuttering.co.uk.
