```markdownSelf-Esteem: You Are Not Who You Think You Are
Summary:
David, a successful businessman with a family, attended one of my intensive workshops. Despite his achievements, he struggled with feelings of inadequacy."I'm insufficient," he confessed. "I'm inadequate."
Seeing this kind man, I felt a deep sadness. He didn’t truly know himself.
"Why do you believe that?" I asked.
"I didn’t do well in school and have made many mistakes."
"So, you're basing your worth on your performance?" I inquired.
"Of course."
David couldn’t imagine defining his worth in any way other than his achievements, which he never deemed good enough.
I encouraged David to look inward and describe what he saw. He only saw emptiness.
"Close your eyes, David. Imagine a wonderful being who loves you very much. Who comes to mind?"
"My grandfather. He died when I was young, but he truly loved me."
"Great. Now, see yourself through your grandfather’s eyes. What does he see?"
"He sees a bright, creative boy who is kind, caring, and loves to make others laugh."
"Is there anything wrong or insufficient about this boy?"
"No! He is wonderful."
"David, this is who you truly are. You're not your performance. Your worth isn't tied to what you do but to who you are. It's intrinsic."
David realized his critical parents made him feel unworthy, leading him to neglect himself emotionally. He always cared for others but neglected his own well-being, echoing his childhood experiences.
"David, if you viewed yourself as your grandfather did rather than through your parents' eyes, how would that change things?"
"I treat my dog better than myself! I'd never judge my dog as I do myself."
"What would you do differently then?"
"I’d stop judging myself as inadequate. I'm a good person. I value my friends for who they are, not their performance. So I must value those qualities in myself too!"
"What else would change if you valued who you are?"
"I’d listen to my feelings and meet my own needs, not just others’. I’d see taking care of myself as necessary, not selfish. I'd be as attentive to myself as I am to my dog!"
David was glowing, discovering his true self, not the version he thought he was.
Many believe their worth depends on appearance or achievements. These are fleeting. What truly matters is your heart and soul. By shifting your focus from the external to the internal, you'll realize you're already a beautiful being deserving of love.
