Raw Potatoes and Dining Lessons
The Drawback of Complaining
I must confess: I’m a huge believer in the Law of Attraction. It’s central to my life, coaching, and teaching. Yet, there's a downside: it steals the joy from complaining! When you truly grasp the Law of Attraction, you realize that complaining only draws more of what you’re griping about.
A Dining Experience
Take last weekend, for example. My friend and I stopped at a quaint diner after a coastal hike. I ordered eggs, potatoes, and a biscuit, while he went for a BLT. Everything was fine until we started reminiscing about a pricey dinner we had recently.
“Can you believe their prices?” I grumbled.
“Nope,” he replied.
“$18.50 for a personal pizza? What are they thinking?”
“And what’s with the people who eat there?” he wondered.
“Sure, the food’s good, but not ‘$18.50 with no leftovers’ good.”
Sensing the negativity, I suddenly realized, “Uh oh, Mike, we’re in trouble.”
“Why?”
“As students of the Law of Attraction, we know our griping is just inviting more dissatisfaction. We’re basically telling the Universe to give us more of what we don’t like!”
“Oh man, you’re right.”
We tried shifting our focus to things we enjoyed about dining out, but it was too late. My potatoes arrived raw?"milky white, oily, and hard inside. I like my veggies with a bite, but not potatoes. They should be crispy outside and soft inside. My friend, a professional chef, was kinder but still noted they were undercooked.
The Temptation of Complaining
And there I was, complaining again.
“These potatoes aren’t done. I can’t believe they’d serve them like this. I’ll ask for hash browns.”
But the waitress never returned to check on us, fueling my frustration.
“This is why good managers ensure their staff checks in,” I ranted.
Mike just ate his BLT, bemused, waiting for me to catch on.
Eventually, I recognized it: “I’m doing it again.”
“Yup,” he nodded.
Complaining is tempting. Many of us grew up surrounded by it, finding comfort in grumbling when things go wrong?"or even when they don’t. It creates an illusion of control or relief.
Whether it’s about terrible traffic, rude encounters, or the unsatisfactory performance of your new toaster, complaining focuses our energy on negativity.
Changing the Pattern
Each complaint signals to the Universe: this is where my focus lies. And the Universe answers, "Here’s more of it."
How do you break this cycle? Redirect your focus. Look for what’s working, what brings joy. Instead of fixating on a restaurant’s high prices, notice what you liked. Was the food tasty? Was the service okay? Didn’t like the decor? Maybe the ambiance? No? Well, at least there are no dishes to wash!
Find any aspect of your experience to enjoy.
The Law of Attraction is simple: you attract what you focus on. Focus on what bothers you, and you’ll receive more of it. Shift your attention to what brings you joy, and you’ll experience more of that. It really is that straightforward.
