Article Body:
Fraud continues to be a pervasive issue globally, impacting companies of all sizes. The study "Economic Crime: People, Culture and Controls" by PricewaterhouseCoopers reveals that fraud levels have remained steady for over eight years. Surprisingly, only 11% expect to encounter fraud in their own country within the next two years.
Steven Skalak, Global Investigations and Forensics Leader at PricewaterhouseCoopers, emphasizes that merely having controls in place isn't enough. He advocates for a strong ethical culture that supports whistle-blowing to combat fraud effectively. Notably, 62% of companies with over 5,000 employees reported experiencing fraud.
The study identifies several motivations for fraud, including the pursuit of a luxurious lifestyle, financial incentives, and career frustration. Interestingly, in 40% of cases, employees were unaware of their wrongdoing, while 26% minimized the financial consequences to the company.
Fraud is equally prevalent in both emerging and developed economies, including regions like Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia, and Turkey. However, the financial impact is notably higher in emerging markets, which account for 45% of the $4.2 billion in global financial losses.
Skalak warns that businesses operating in emerging markets should recognize cultural differences in fraud risks and prepare to face potentially inappropriate schemes.
