Overcoming Touch Deprivation
Summary:
From the moment you were born, thriving depended significantly on how much you were lovingly touched.

In 1965, I was born two months premature in Trinidad, weighing just 4 pounds. Placed in an incubator, doctors advised my mother not to form an attachment, as my chances of survival were a mere ten percent. My mother refused to accept this.
She surrounded me with touch and love, willing me to live. And live I did. Today, I'm a 6'3", 200-pound man in excellent health. This speaks to the astounding power of love and touch.
As we age, we often experience less physical contact, despite our inherent need for it remaining strong. Touch deprivation is a significant form of sensory deprivation. We wouldn't consider blocking our vision or hearing for weeks, yet many of my patients haven't been held or massaged in that long.
Our society has become overly formal, stiff, and emotionally distant. For the well-being of your physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health, grant yourself more opportunities for touch. Loving touch is something from which you can never overdose.
Don’t confine touch to sexual encounters or only to your partner and family. Reach out and embrace more people. Occasionally, close your eyes and engage with the world through touch.
Your skin, the largest organ, offers a path to deeper connection. Seek more skin-to-skin contact. Through touch, we can both heal and be healed.
Become a great healer and lover by embracing the miracle of touch as often as possible.
