New Hope for Sufferers of Obsessive and Compulsive Disorders

Summary

A significant number of people endure disorders that defy simple categorization and lack a universally effective treatment. Disorders like Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), and various eating disorders such as Anorexia and Bulimia persist as real challenges, despite some understanding, especially of eating disorders.

Article Body

Many individuals battle disorders that don't fit neatly into any specific category, and for which there's no single effective treatment. Conditions like Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), along with eating disorders such as Anorexia and Bulimia, continue to affect many, despite advances in understanding.

Recently, there's been a noticeable increase in people seeking help for these conditions. Such disorders can profoundly disrupt the lives of those affected. While some find relief through medication or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), these methods don't work for everyone. My commitment to helping people led me to invest a great deal of time studying these conditions and their treatments.

I've been working with a young man facing severe BDD, and therapy has gradually helped him overcome his distorted self-image. Though it's still early, I'm encouraged by the progress in treating these conditions.

BDD, or Body Dysmorphic Disorder, involves extreme dissatisfaction with one's physical appearance, which can manifest as excessive concern over features like ears, nose, skin, sweating, or voice. These negative perceptions lead to coping mechanisms, such as frequent mirror-checking, excessive makeup use, and seeking reassurance from others.

Treatment for BDD involves four core techniques:

1. Relaxation and Distress Management: Patients are taught to relax and manage distress, which is more beneficial than many might expect. They are introduced to hypnosis and various therapeutic techniques.

2. Emotion Symbolization: Patients explore their challenging emotions in a non-threatening, symbolic manner, akin to a "pre-wash cycle" for their feelings.

3. Thought Re-patterning: Individuals learn to break obsessive thought patterns by retraining their conscious and subconscious minds, using hypnotherapeutic models to create better thought patterns at a deep unconscious level.

4. Future Self-Projection: Patients are guided to visualize and embrace a positive, confident self-image for the future.

Typically, BDD treatment involves 6 to 10 sessions. The first session lasts 120 minutes, followed by 60 to 90-minute sessions. Initially, sessions are weekly, transitioning to bi-weekly as treatment progresses.

I'm pleased to offer free consultations for those interested in learning more about how Clinical Hypnosis can aid them. They can make informed decisions, potentially consulting their GP or specialist. Clinical Hypnotherapists unfamiliar with these conditions are welcome to contact me for an update on my methods.
