Who doesn't love being truly listened to? We long for good friends and life partners who can share our experiences?"good or bad. Whether we're feeling mad, sad, frustrated, happy, or excited, we seek the company of someone who listens, even during the simplest daily conversations.

Though we enjoy being heard, many of us aren't great listeners. Often, we're so focused on what we want to say that we stop truly hearing others. As a life and relationship coach, I've observed that many disputes linger because people don't hear each other.

Listening is fundamental to relationships and understanding. Without it, how do we learn about each other or make our partners feel valued? Being heard makes us feel validated and helps us release pent-up thoughts and emotions.

In all relationships, especially intimate ones, being a good listener is as important as being heard. When working with couples, I frequently help restate what each person is saying because they're too caught up in their own feelings to listen. You can't understand what someone is saying or feeling unless you take the time to see things from their perspective. Without hearing each other, working through issues and resolving differences is impossible.

There are skills to being a good listener, which I refer to as having an "open ear."

Being an Active Listener
An open ear means being an active listener. Focus entirely on what is being said without worrying about your response. By freeing yourself from the need to comment, you can be fully present, showing the speaker that you're paying attention. Keep your body language relaxed, avoiding fidgeting. Restlessness or boredom can make the speaker self-conscious.

Maintain eye contact. This prevents your mind from wandering and lets the speaker's facial expressions add to their story. Listen with your ears and your eyes. Show you’re listening by staying focused, not interrupting.

Listen Without Speaking
Most people, including you, don’t want excessive feedback?"they just want to be heard. Avoid interrupting with advice or judgments. Having an open ear means simply listening. Offer feedback only when asked and avoid dominating the conversation or sounding like you’re lecturing. If you start lecturing, the speaker might regret opening up and feel more resentment than relief.

Your agreement with what you're hearing isn't necessary. Listening with an open ear helps you understand different perspectives and might even teach you something. Being patient and open to new ideas can reveal the speaker’s valid points. Listening doesn't mean you share the same viewpoint; it means you care enough to listen. In relationships, understanding your partner’s feelings can be more important than arguing. Our feelings reflect who we are.

Show That You've Listened
While listening, confirm your engagement by repeating short phrases of what you've heard. You don’t need all the answers; the speaker often just needs to be heard. Express empathy with simple responses like, "I’m sorry that’s happening." Show your interest with questions, and you’ll discover more about the person than you knew before.

Conclusion
Be patient, pay attention, and listen with an open ear to see your relationships improve. "Mastering good listening skills is one of the most precious gifts you can give to those you live, work, and play with. It will help build and maintain strong bonds, endear you to those you care about, and even improve your work environment."

In essence, to listen means just that?"listen.
