A Personal Journey
A few years ago, I found myself in a period of depression. It’s something many people experience, and seeking help was important to me. As a counselor, it felt unusual to see another counselor, but I believe that healing often occurs when we open up and share with others. Discovering a New Passion
Learning to write Chinese characters was nestled in the middle of my list. I didn’t have a specific reason for choosing it, other than a lingering fascination from a past trip to China. The written characters are stunningly beautiful, and they captivated me. Last fall, I enrolled in an introductory Chinese class to begin my journey into mastering these characters.
Overcoming Challenges
I quickly realized that Chinese characters are as challenging as they appear. Despite having some artistic talent, I struggled with learning them. It required discipline and consistent practice to grasp even the simplest characters. Some friends advised me to give up, knowing I don’t plan to learn the language itself.
Yet, there’s something about the characters that keeps me going. Perhaps it’s a lesson in commitment, a drive to achieve my goals, no matter how small they may seem. My counselor’s advice about the healing power of pursuing meaningful goals resonated with me, and it’s proven to be true.

Focusing on personal goals has brought me significant healing and self-discovery. Even a seemingly small task, like learning to write Chinese characters, has taught me invaluable lessons about myself. It has reinforced my belief in the transformative power of dedication and pursuit of things that truly matter to us.
