Article:

Have you ever hesitated to make a decision because you weren't sure you could trust yourself? How often have you felt a gut instinct warning you, only to ignore it? Deep down, we often know what's best for us. So why do we doubt ourselves?

Many of us learn not to trust ourselves from a young age. This can be due to untrustworthy relationships or impactful life experiences that shake our confidence. Perhaps there's a painful memory of trusting yourself only to face disappointing consequences. Sometimes, the struggle to trust ourselves stems from not fully understanding who we are or what matters most to us. Other times, external pressures, fear, or feelings of unworthiness prevent us from following our intuition.

It's natural for decisions not to always work out as planned. I once took up tap dance lessons, convinced I'd love it. As a child, I dreamed of tap dancing, but within two lessons, I realized it wasn't for me?"even though I loved watching it, doing it felt tedious.

Sometimes, red flags are evident, yet we ignore them. Before marrying my ex-husband, I felt apprehensive and even cried to a friend on my wedding day due to something he said. Despite warning signs, I convinced myself marriage was best for our young son. We separated within a year.

Trusting yourself also means understanding that not all decisions will be perfect. Successful entrepreneurs will tell you they've weighed pros and cons, sought expert advice, and made informed decisions. Despite their best efforts, some decisions still didn't work out. However, this doesn't mean you can't trust yourself in the future.

Trusting yourself is key to self-love. You know yourself better than anyone, and no one else can take care of you the same way. Until you trust yourself, you can't fully trust others. Consider this example: my husband would ask if his hair looked good daily. Though I reassured him, he couldn't believe it, as his own lack of trust overshadowed others’ opinions.

When you don’t trust yourself, you'll rely on others for guidance, leading to an externally focused life where decisions are made for you. Make personal decisions based on your values and what's best for you. While you can seek others' opinions, your feelings should guide you. If you're unsure, take time to listen to your intuition. If you have a connection with a higher power, prayer can help reveal the truth.

During my coaching training, we were taught to trust our intuition. Many of us wondered how to be sure we were right. You can only know by testing it. We were told to express our intuition honestly and observe the client's response. The more we trusted our instincts and found them accurate, the more confidence we gained.

Experiment with trusting your gut. When you're unsure about a decision, pay attention to your initial reaction. Avoid overthinking or dismissing your feelings. Act on your intuition and see the outcome. Keep a record of times when trusting yourself led to positive results. As you practice, trusting yourself will become second nature. And if you make a mistake, learn from it and move forward. It's better to trust yourself and make a mistake than never to trust yourself at all.
