Good Self, Bad Self: Striking a Balance
Do You Walk Your Talk?
Many of us believe we mean what we say, yet often find ourselves unable to follow through on our intentions. Why do we habitually promise to change but fall back into old routines? Think about how many New Year's resolutions are quickly forgotten.
This inconsistency isn't because we're dishonest; we genuinely mean well at the time. However, we're soon confronted with conflicting emotions and actions.
The Tug of War Within
We often fool ourselves through denial, projecting an image that doesn't align with our actions. This is known as "cognitive dissonance"?"the discomfort that arises from saying one thing while doing another. To avoid this feeling, we create a complex web of denial, sometimes becoming oblivious to our behaviors.
The Cost of Ignoring the Conflict
Acknowledging that our actions don't match our ideals can be unpleasant. We think we don't have time for such negativity, as it hampers our productivity and focus. Thus, we live with these inner conflicts, excusing our inconsistencies as part of being human.
However, this internal struggle drains our energy. The effort to maintain a semblance of harmony among our contrasting desires can lead to fatigue and irritability.
Recognizing Inner Complexity
Many are unaware of their internal complexity, which becomes problematic when setting goals without considering the different facets of our personalities. We have competing commitments. For instance, while we may strive for health, we're also tempted by immediate pleasures. Similarly, our dedication to career success can sometimes clash with family commitments.
Striving for Balance
Human beings are complex, driven by diverse values. True self-awareness is challenging but essential for setting appropriate goals and priorities. Start by identifying 3?"5 key values that deeply motivate you, alongside any competing values that require attention. Often, something we value is countered by another value we also hold dear.
Setting Realistic Goals
After identifying your strongest motivations and their competing counterparts, revise your goals to honor both aspects of your personality. Establish achievable objectives that accommodate your competing values.
By doing so, you'll create a more harmonious and fulfilling path. Embracing both sides of yourself will lead to a more balanced and content life.
