Fear of Flying
The plane jolted as we began our descent into Albuquerque. Living in Santa Fe, I've flown in and out of Albuquerque often for my workshops. It's always a bit rough.
Next to me, a woman clutched her armrests, visibly terrified. I turned to her and asked if she’d like some help. She nodded.
“Don’t worry, we’re safe,” I assured her.
“How do you know?” she questioned.
“Our minds can play tricks on us, making us feel out of control and scared. We can't control the plane or the pilot, but we can connect with a deeper truth. Think of your mind as a computer, limited by what’s programmed into it. The real Source of Truth is like the internet?"a vast, enlightening network. Imagine it as a beautiful light filled with wisdom. If you open yourself to it and ask, ‘Are we safe?’ you might find peace.”
Despite her skepticism, the woman closed her eyes and focused. Moments later, she opened them with surprise.
“I heard, ‘You are safe.’ Did I just make that up?”
“How do you feel if you believe it?” I asked.
“Much better! I’m not so scared!”
“That’s because our emotions guide us. When we believe lies, we feel bad. When we connect with Truth, we find peace. Whether this truth comes from within or beyond doesn’t matter. What matters is accessing it. I always check in with this Truth before flying, so even during turbulence, I know I'm safe.”
She smiled for the rest of the flight, even as the plane continued to bounce.
Fear, whether of flying or anything else, stems from what we tell ourselves. Covering it with distractions, like drinking, only hides the lies we believe. The part of us operating from fear hates losing control and often believes falsehoods. But true safety doesn’t come from our limited minds. It comes from opening to a higher truth?"the guidance of Spirit.
Paradoxically, by releasing control to a higher Source, we gain a sense of safety grounded in truth. True security arises from connecting with the Source of Truth.
