Diversity and Unity: Embracing Our Similarities
Embracing Diversity and Unity
Have you ever felt uneasy around someone different from you? Perhaps they had a different ethnic background, skin color, or displayed intelligence in an area you don't, like being "book smart" versus "street smart." It might even be their style of dress or an unexplained aversion you felt.
Recently, I experienced public ridicule over my spiritual beliefs. The sting was real. Everyone desires acceptance, and rejection can be painful. The person didn't know me but decided I wasn't acceptable based on a single aspect of my identity.
Understanding Intolerance
Have you faced rejection because of your religion, ethnicity, or appearance? It never feels good and can lead us to question our self-worth. Intolerance often roots itself in two dynamics beneath the surface.
Fear of the Unknown: Without personal experience with diverse cultures, religions, or social classes, we may rely on stereotypes?"fixed notions set by societal teachings. Imagine seeing a man dressed differently, perhaps carrying a spear and wearing face paint. Fear might be your first reaction because he defies the norm, even though he could be a respected figure. Unknowns trigger fear.
Competitive Thinking: We might feel threatened by differences, believing if someone else’s beliefs are correct, ours must be incorrect. We chase trends in fashion, technology, and social circles, rejecting those who diverge. This mindset breeds insecurity, masked by overconfidence. Rather than displaying strength, it reveals a fragile arrogance.
Building True Confidence
A truly self-confident person doesn’t ridicule others or reject them. Instead, they build others up, understanding that boosting others raises themselves too. They welcome differences and find value in learning from those unlike them.
Despite our surface differences, we share much in common. We are all connected spiritually. Have you ever exchanged a sincere smile with a stranger? In that moment, you're connected. It's an exchange of energy recognizing the divinity in each other. Physically, we all seek love, acceptance, and a safe, productive life. At our core, we share more similarities than differences.
Embracing Our Common Humanity
Focus on our shared traits. Even when someone appears different, acknowledge the ways we are similar and honor their uniqueness. Diversity enriches life. Imagine how mundane the world would be if we were all the same.
Let me leave you with a beautiful Sanskrit word: Namaste, meaning "the Divine in me recognizes and bows to the Divine in you." May we always honor the divine spark in each of us every day.
