Do You Owe a Debt of Gratitude?

Summary:

We often have a network of teachers, coaches, and mentors who guide us towards our potential. It's essential to recognize and thank these individuals, but even more importantly, we should repay this debt to society. Have you acknowledged your debt? Have you begun to pay it forward, or are you still ignoring it?

Article:

As the year draws to a close, many of us reflect on our blessings. It's also a perfect time to appreciate the people who contributed to these gifts, especially the intangible ones like self-esteem, confidence, passion for music or sports, and resilience. Who has made a lasting impact on your life? Who helped you become the person you are today?

Consider the mentors who believed in you, those who taught you to see life differently, or simply those who were always there for you. Most of us are lucky to have had not just one, but a team of teachers, coaches, and mentors. As we navigate the lives they helped shape, it's important to thank these individuals repeatedly. More crucially, we need to repay this debt?"not to them directly, but to society as a whole.

The idea of owing a debt to society often comes up in discussions about crime, but in truth, all of us owe something. Not because we've caused harm, but because we've benefited from the good deeds of others.

As a Presbyterian, I find guidance in the phrase from the Lord's Prayer: "And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors." While we can never truly repay our debt to God, this teaches us to do good for its own sake, without expecting anything in return.

When it comes to acts of kindness, there's rarely a direct reciprocity. Often, those in need may never be able to return the favor. But that's not the point. The goal is to add to a collective fund of kindness. Throughout my life, I've benefited from this fund and will likely continue to do so.

This concept of kindness as a fund or bank is powerful. It grows exponentially, much like a well-invested monetary fund. We should be grateful, as many of us don't adequately repay our societal debt.

Typically, we might donate occasionally, participate in a raffle, or volunteer a few hours on a project. A select few dedicate substantial time, energy, or resources to societal good, but they are too few in number.

When faced with time or financial constraints, charitable activities are often the first to go. I've been guilty of this myself. What if, instead, we prioritized helping others?

This week, I challenge you to boost our collective goodness fund. Embrace the concept of "Pay It Forward." When you receive kindness, pass it on at the first opportunity. Don't wait. Don't calculate. Choose the path of integrity. You’ll recognize what’s right when it comes along.
