Why Can't We Have It All?
Summary
Growing up, I often heard, "You can't have it all." While I understand the reasoning behind it?"like not hogging all the meatballs from the spaghetti?"there’s more to it.Article
Throughout my life, I've wanted to pursue countless interests, only to be told it wasn't possible. For instance, when I shifted my career dream from photojournalist to teacher, my mother insisted I reconsider. There’s a long story there, but I'll save it for another time.
The idea that "you can't have it all" is something I've frequently encountered. Yes, you can't take all the meatballs from the spaghetti; that would leave none for others. The same goes for chocolate chips in cookies.
You can't drive all the cars you desire because there simply isn't enough time. Likewise, amassing all the money might require endless work, leaving no room for enjoyment or spending.
However, what's puzzling to me is the notion that I can't explore any interest I wish for as long as I want. I’m not willing to accept a life confined to a single role. Why not spend a few years making widgets, then switch to sales, maybe dabble in teaching, or even mix them all?
Who decides these limitations?
Why can’t we strive for it all? Perhaps not simultaneously, but over the span of a lifetime.
Aren’t you planning on living a full one?
