Motivation by Embracing Reality
Embracing Reality for True Motivation
Some of the most profound truths are often the ones right under our noses, yet we frequently overlook them. This article explores the vital role of confronting reality and recognizing that often, more effort is required to truly complete our tasks.
The Illusion of Completion
It's all too easy to convince ourselves that we’ve finished a task when we haven’t. True motivation lies in diligently examining our work to ensure it’s truly complete and done well. When fatigue sets in and we feel we've done enough, it can be tempting to stop before the task is truly finished.
For instance, whenever I mowed the lawn thinking I was done, my mother would point out untrimmed edges I’d missed. She was right; the lawn wasn’t truly finished. While no task can be completed with absolute perfection, it should withstand scrutiny.
The Importance of Doing It Right
Consider a package mistakenly delivered to No. 9 instead of No. 19. The postman failed to do his job correctly, relying on others to fix his mistake. This highlights the importance of thoroughness in our efforts.
Lessons from Marlon Sanders
Recently, I encountered an enlightening account by Martin Avis about a lecture given by internet guru Marlon Sanders in Birmingham, UK, in January 2005. Marlon’s words left a lasting impression on me and the audience.
Before he began speaking, Marlon got everyone to blow bubbles, relaxing the room and capturing attention. During his talk, he emphasized something crucial:
“There are only two things that matter:
Things are either DONE, or they AIN’T DONE.”
Raising his voice, Marlon delivered his message powerfully:
“When something's done, you have a product, a promotion, something that will earn you money.
If it’s not done?"half done, nearly done, or someday done?"IT AIN'T DONE!”
His passion was palpable, even catching the attention of the people next door.
“And if it AIN'T DONE, it’s nothing.
DONE means making money, enjoying the beach, taking long vacations, and having fun. DONE equals a smile.
AIN'T DONE means no product, no vacation, no beach, no money, no fun. AIN'T DONE equals a sad face.”
Marlon’s point was clear and impactful.
The Essence of Success
Success isn’t just about doing what we plan, but also about not leaving things half-finished. It can be succinctly boiled down to one simple choice: DONE or AIN’T DONE.
These words of wisdom emphasize the core of achievement. Success hinges on completing our goals fully, while failure often stems from leaving things incomplete.
Remember, embracing reality and finishing what we start are the keys to genuine success and satisfaction.
