It's a Habit

Summary

Have you ever felt like you're encountering the same challenges repeatedly? Many of my conflicts seem familiar, like déjà vu, yet I can't pinpoint why I end up in similar situations. Although the circumstances vary, the conflicts feel eerily similar.

Revisiting the Same Obstacles

Have you ever felt like you're encountering the same challenges repeatedly? Many of my conflicts seem familiar, like déjà vu, yet I can't pinpoint why I end up in similar situations. Although the circumstances vary, the conflicts feel eerily similar.

I came across a poem in "The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying" by Sogyal Rinpoche that resonated deeply with me. It's widely shared online, and here's why:

"Autobiography in Five Chapters"

1. I walk down the street.
- There's a deep hole in the sidewalk.
- I fall in.
- I'm lost and helpless.
- It’s not my fault.
- It takes forever to get out.

2. I walk down the same street.
- There's a deep hole in the sidewalk.
- I pretend not to see it.
- I fall in again.
- I can't believe I'm in the same place.
- But it’s not my fault.
- It still takes a long time to get out.

3. I walk down the same street.
- There's a deep hole in the sidewalk.
- I see it is there.
- I still fall in; it's a habit.
- My eyes are open.
- I know where I am.
- It is my fault.
- I get out immediately.

4. I walk down the same street.
- There's a deep hole in the sidewalk.
- I walk around it.

5. I walk down another street.

Learning and Growing

Does this feel familiar? I'm eager to learn the lesson this time. I believe I've changed, spotting the hole from a distance. Yet, I still find myself falling in, feeling tired, sad, and angry. What was I supposed to learn here? I thought I'd mastered this last time.

Some conflicts seem to take years to unravel. However, with curiosity and awareness, we can pinpoint the moment when we can step around the hole.

Reflecting on a recent stumble, I find myself smiling a little. Watching myself fall into a familiar trap is somewhat amusing. Perhaps laughter is the key to escaping the cycle. As a friend once said, "Love our mistakes." They say eventually we'll laugh at all our mistakes?"the trick is to laugh sooner. When I can laugh climbing out of the hole, I'm closer to finding a new path or, better yet, a completely different street.
