Simple Leadership Basics
Introduction
Leadership is often surrounded by jargon and debate, complicating what should be straightforward. If you've just been promoted and are overseeing a team for the first time, there are a few essential basics to understand about leadership.
Understanding Your New Role
Upon your promotion to a leadership position, you don't magically transform overnight. Adapting to your new role can take over a year, and during this time, it's important to realize that your leadership is defined by how your team perceives you. Your responsibility is to decide the quality of leadership you will demonstrate.
Power and Influence Shift
Interestingly, as you become a leader, your individual power diminishes. Previously, you had control over your own performance; now, your success hinges on the collective efforts of your team. However, your influence increases. Your words and actions are closely observed, and they have the power to shape your team's behavior towards achieving goals.
Balancing Objectives and Care
Leadership involves two main responsibilities: achieving objectives and caring for your team. While short-term success might be possible without focusing on your team's well-being, long-term achievements depend on the dedicated cooperation of your team.
Measuring Success
Ultimately, leadership can be evaluated based on two key questions: Did we achieve our goals? Are our team members better off today than they were yesterday?
