Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People?
This question has been on my mind a lot this past week. My Uncle Carl, one of the best people I know, had a terrible accident on the wood lot with his son. His hand got caught in a log splitter, and unfortunately, the damage was so severe that his left hand had to be amputated.
Although he’s no longer young, Uncle Carl is very active and loves working with his hands. He's right-handed, but the use of both hands was crucial in his life, and this will require a huge adjustment.
The news devastated me, and I’m still shaken, especially when I think about how much worse it could have been. Our entire family is deeply affected, most notably Uncle Carl’s wife and children, especially my cousin John, who was there during the accident.
As I sifted through my worry and grief, the question lingered: Why do bad things happen to good people?
This isn’t just a common phrase?"my uncle truly is a good man.
He’s a devoted family man, still with his high school sweetheart. He loves his four children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren wholeheartedly. When his parents were alive, he was a dedicated son, and he's cherished by his siblings, nieces, and nephews. Over the years, he and his wife have opened their home to many children and young people, always extending their hearts to family, friends, and the community.
Uncle Carl has worked hard all his life, mastering the land and machinery with his hands and shoulders. He’s played a significant role in his community, serving as a volunteer firefighter and a pillar of his church congregation.
Despite his goodness, life hasn’t been easy for him, leading me to wonder why he needed yet another burden.
Some Christians say God sends trials to test us, and maybe there's truth in that. Challenges often reveal our hidden strengths. However, I feel that my uncle is already well aware of his own capabilities, having faced many challenges before.
Loss can also highlight what we have, perhaps things we’ve taken for granted. Though Uncle Carl’s life has been challenging, it’s also been immensely rewarding. I doubt he envies his siblings' wealth or professional success. He wouldn't trade his loving family for any of that. Were he wealthier, I’m sure he would use it to benefit his loved ones.
He is deeply loved by many, not just his immediate and extended family, but countless others whose lives he’s touched. Prayers for him are being sent from coast to coast. I believe he wouldn’t trade this love and respect for all the professional success his siblings have achieved.
While we grieve with him for the loss of his hand, we can't pity him when considering the abundant gifts he possesses.
Ultimately, when you take a step back and see the man he is, the missing hand is almost unnoticed. Uncle Carl is much more than the sum of his parts, and it’s the size of his heart that stands out.
Notably, he still has his right hand?"the one he’s extended countless times to offer love, friendship, and help.
