Who Are the Underminers?
Introduction
Many of us have experienced being told to limit ourselves from achieving our full potential. A perfect metaphor for this is the movie The Incredibles. In it, superheroes with extraordinary abilities are restricted from using their powers.
Personal Reflections
Growing up, I wasn't encouraged to be my best self. Comments like "Boys don’t like smart girls," or "People will be jealous of you," made me hide my talents for fear others would feel threatened. Fitting in meant being ordinary, with being exceptional seen as strange.
The Message in The Incredibles
In the movie, superheroes eventually use their powers because they are needed to save the planet. This serves as a metaphor for our lives. We are all unique, and the world needs us to embrace our gifts and talents. We need extraordinary individuals to lead us away from fear, greed, and manipulation, towards compassion and personal responsibility. Luckily, more young people today are encouraged to be their best selves.
The Concept of Underminers
At the film’s conclusion, a monstrous figure emerges, claiming, "We are the underminers. We undermine happiness, peace, and joy. We are always beneath you."
But who are the underminers?
External Underminers
External underminers are those who don’t have your best interests at heart. They might use, blame, manipulate, or try to control you because they're threatened by your potential. They may want you to care for them rather than take responsibility for yourself. These individuals could be family, friends, or colleagues?"anyone who doesn't support your growth. It's disheartening when those who claim to care about you actually limit you.
Internal Underminers
While external underminers can be damaging, it is often our internal underminers that cause the most harm. These are the wounded parts of ourselves that harbor limiting beliefs and falsehoods about us, others, and even higher powers. They whisper lies that incite fear and anxiety, hindering our true potential.
Examples
- Paul, competent yet immobilized by the fear of failure.
- Julia, a talented writer who hesitates to share her work with the world.
- Joanna, wanting more from life but paralyzed by fear of change and inadequacy.
- Robert, stuck in an unsupportive relationship, driven by fear of loneliness.
- Suzanne, successful yet undermined by past beliefs, fearing perpetual solitude.
Moving Forward
The voices of underminers?"internal or external?"whisper, "You can’t," "You will fail," "You are inadequate," "You will end up alone." These undermine our happiness, peace, and joy.
Why not choose to be a superhero in your own life and stop listening to these underminers?
Embrace your unique potential and lead your life with courage and confidence.
