What Are Your Debts?
Reflecting on Gratitude and Giving Back
As the year draws to a close, it’s a natural time to reflect on all we’re grateful for. Yet, it’s equally important to consider those who have contributed to these blessings?"especially the intangible ones like self-esteem, confidence, a love for sports or music, and resilience. Who do you owe the greatest debt? Was it a special person or group that helped shape who you are today?
Acknowledging Influential Figures
Think about those who believed in you, who taught you to see life anew, or who stood by you no matter what. Many of us have been fortunate to have an entire team of mentors, teachers, and coaches guiding us to our full potential. It’s vital to thank these people and, more importantly, to repay this debt?"not directly to them, but to society as a whole.
Understanding Our Debt to Society
The concept of owing a debt sometimes refers to criminal rehabilitation, but it applies to everyone. We all owe a debt to society?"not because of any wrongdoing, but due to the good we’ve received. As a Presbyterian, I reflect on the phrase from the Lord’s Prayer, “And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.” While we can never fully repay our debt to God, the idea suggests we should do good without expecting a return.
The Kindness Fund Concept
Acts of kindness should not be a one-to-one exchange. Often, those we help cannot reciprocate in kind. Whenever I contribute charitably or show kindness, I view it as adding to a collective fund of goodwill. Throughout my life, I’ve benefited from this fund, and I’m sure I will continue to do so.
Investing in Kindness
Think of this fund as a bank where value grows exponentially. Many of us contribute occasionally?"writing checks, buying raffle tickets, or volunteering. Yet, few dedicate substantial time, energy, or resources for the greater good. Too often, when pressed for time or money, our charitable acts are the first to be cut. I’ve been guilty of this myself, but imagine if we prioritized helping others instead?
A Challenge to Give Back
This week, I challenge you to find ways to contribute to this goodness fund. Embrace the "Pay It Forward" mentality. When someone offers you help, pass it on at your first opportunity. Don’t be selective or wait for the right moment. Do what feels right, and you’ll know when you see it.
Let’s take these reflections to heart and strive to repay the kindness we’ve received by enriching the world around us.
