Reflections on a New Image
Overview
I sometimes face an identity crisis, and I believe it’s beneficial. It's a chance to ask myself essential questions: Who am I? What am I doing? Do I enjoy it? Am I good at it? Will it make a positive impact on the world? How do others perceive my efforts?Rethinking My Image
Recently, I decided to revamp my business card and letterhead. I had broadened my work in voice, conflict resolution, and aikido, and I wanted my visual identity to reflect these changes. I sought help from a colleague, assuming it would be straightforward. She provided a clearer and more powerful portrayal of my work than I expected, challenging and delighting me.Aikido and Power
I thought I understood myself and just needed to integrate my diverse skills into a cohesive image. However, my existing image didn’t capture the entirety of my identity or my work. In Aikido, two key elements are blending with energy and gaining power from it. This martial art is both powerful and non-resistant. Verbally, it involves asserting oneself while respecting others, using words to connect rather than attack.I have always embraced the flow of aikido but found it harder to harness its power. Similarly, in life, blending (listening, acknowledging) comes naturally, while asserting power (stating my needs, saying no) is more challenging. My previous image reflected this struggle.
Embracing Power
In my aikido practice and life, I am learning to wield power, which is enjoyable yet challenging. I grapple with reconciling my 'nice' persona with a more powerful image. The essence of aikido is that true power comes from blending?"power without blending is harmful, and blending without power leads to losing our center. The new graphic representation of my work forced me to reevaluate my self-image. It arrived just as my work was evolving to include the powerful aspects of aikido, perfectly capturing this transition.
Critical Questions
The question "Who am I?" is a recurring internal conflict. Both personally and professionally, we must periodically reassess whether our internal and external images align. This reflection is crucial for thriving as individuals or organizations. As Annie Dillard said, "How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives." Revisiting our image prompts us to ask important questions about creating the life or entity we truly desire and love. Our true power lies not in controlling others' perceptions but in discovering and highlighting our hidden potential.
As we continue to evolve, it's important to reflect: Am I enjoying my work? Am I creating my life anew each day? What energizes me? Where am I heading? These are vital questions for all of us right now.
