Summary
There are two kinds of people in the world: those who embrace life and those who withdraw from it.About 15 years ago, a close friend of mine named Mike passed away at the age of 45. He had cancer. Although we lived on opposite sides of Australia and didn't see each other often, our meetings were filled with laughter and endless conversations.
Mike had a loving family and a successful business. He was genuinely happy. We all knew he was going to die, but there was no sorrow in his eyes. Instead, he exuded a calm peace that made it comfortable for us to be around him and even discuss the inevitable. When I asked him how he felt about life and death, he shared this story:
"When I was a child, we had two dogs. Back then, it was common to tie up dogs, so we did. One of the dogs was laid-back, spending all day lounging around. He had his meals and drinks at the same time, every day, showing little interest in anything. If people walked by, he barely glanced at them before going back to his routine of doing nothing.
The other dog was different?"full of energy, maybe even anger. He was always fighting against being tied up, trying to break free. He barked at everyone, seeking attention at every opportunity.
I'll never forget those two dogs and how they dealt with their situations. One accepted his fate, while the other fought to change it, even if it was futile.
I see people the same way. Some say YES to life, and others say NO. I decided then to say YES?"to live fully and seize every opportunity. I wanted to live every day as if it were my last, ensuring I wouldn’t have regrets or leave things unfinished."
That conversation changed my life. Mike became more than a friend; he became my mentor and role model. I’ve tried to follow his example, cherishing every day as if it were my last.
