Ally Becker came home from school after varsity basketball practice, bubbling with excitement. She rushed through the house: the kitchen, the laundry room, finally finding her father in the living room. "Dad!" she exclaimed.
“One second, Ally,” he replied calmly from the other room. Ally barely contained her enthusiasm, pacing until he appeared.
As soon as he entered, Ally couldn't hold back. "Dad! You've got to meet this woman who spoke at school today. She’s incredible! Her name is Alecia Manning. She's part-owner of a new R&B club downtown. She even invited the whole school to come check it out!”
Her father smiled, seeing her so energized. "I'm thrilled you're excited, Ally. When do you plan to go?"
"Tomorrow?"Friday," Ally replied immediately, grinning.
"Tomorrow night, I have an appointment with Evan's dad," he started, but seeing her disappointment, he added, "I'll call Evan and see if we can meet earlier. I must meet anyone who inspires you this much."
Ally relaxed, grateful. "You’ve always done so much for me since Mom passed. I know you're doing your best..."
He interrupted gently, "Ally, what your mom did was truly amazing. No one can replace her."
They shared a tender hug, tears brimming with shared memories.
The next evening, Mr. Becker arrived at the club, stopping at the entrance guarded by two men who looked like ex-NFL players. "I'm sorry, sir," one said, "you’ll have to wait for a moment.”
Mr. Becker nodded and made a quick call on his cell. Just then, a joyful voice called out, “Mr. Becker?!”
"Alecia?" he said, pleasantly surprised as she ran to greet him with a hug.
“Sorry, Mrs. Manning,” one guard apologized. "I didn’t know he was with you."
"That's alright," Alecia replied, smiling widely. "This is a dear friend?"the man who gave me a chance to succeed. He helped me get scholarships through the store he managed, and even found affordable daycare for my son Alonzo, who’s now 11."
"Alonzo is 11?" Mr. Becker shook his head, amazed. "Was it really ten years ago? You were fresh out of high school."
“And now Alonzo is all grown up!” Alecia grinned.
Mr. Becker, feeling proud, said, "You’ve done so much, Alecia. You always wanted to open a club. You did it!"
“It’s thanks to you,” Alecia replied, her eyes moist with gratitude. “You were the only one who believed in me back then. Remember what you told me about Michael Jordan? That all it took was one person to believe in him?”
“Just like I believed in you,” Mr. Becker nodded.
Alecia smiled, recalling the past. “Back then, I was Alecia Harris. Jamal and I married five years ago.”
“Congratulations! I didn’t know,” Becker beamed.
As they talked, Ally joined them. “Dad! Mrs. Manning!” she said, lighting up. Alecia was surprised. “Mr. Becker is your father?”
Ally’s eyes widened. “You two know each other?”
“Yes,” Alecia chuckled. “Your dad inspired me, just like I mentioned in my talk about the Michael Jordan story. He encouraged me to earn my Bachelor’s degree.”
"My dad did that?" Ally asked, astonished.
“Absolutely,” Alecia affirmed. “Your dad knows more than you think.”
“He tells me the Michael Jordan story all the time!” Ally laughed, her admiration growing. "I guess my dad really is pretty cool."
They all shared a warm laugh, basking in the joy of shared inspiration. Sometimes, all it takes is one person to remind you of your potential.
