A Gift of Energy
Embracing Energy Through Dance
In life, when an attack transforms into a dance, everything becomes a gift of energy.
Couldn't we all use a bit more energy now and then? I certainly could. Wrapped in a blanket, sipping lemon tea, and battling a relentless cough, I find myself yearning for an energy boost. A persistent tickle in my chest has morphed into a full-blown cold, complete with chills and fever.
Aikido, known as "The Way of Harmony," teaches us to see every challenge as energy to dance with. By centering and expanding our ki, or life energy, we connect and harmonize with incoming energy, transforming potential conflict into a safe, harmonious exchange.
Applying this graceful metaphor to personal and professional situations is an ongoing exploration for me. I integrate Aikido principles into my life by sharing its philosophy in workshops. Through physical exercises, we train our bodies to remember how to center, extend, acknowledge, and blend with energy. We learn to dance with conflict rather than resist it.
As I sit here, contemplating how to dance with this ailment, even centering fails to ease the coughing. My ki seems elusive, hidden deep within. Yet, I know the first step is to acknowledge and embrace the situation.
Previously, I would ignore being sick, pushing through work with half my spirit, likely spreading illness and dampening moods. Without acknowledging a problem?"be it a cold or a personal issue?"I cannot embrace it or find solutions.
Most conflicts, whether internal or external, would resolve if we first acknowledged them. Typically, seeing them as negatives, we resist by fighting or fleeing. Viewing challenges as neutral energy, driven only by the charge we assign, allows for curiosity and exploration. Even when unwanted, dancing with energy holds more power than resisting it.
As for my cold, I'm seeking the hidden gift within. Already, I've read a long-neglected book, started another, and enjoyed some much-needed rest between coughs. While the energy's gift isn't always apparent, asking "Where's the gift?" is a step toward new possibilities.
