Finding Peace: 4 Steps to Overcome Worry
A friend of mine has a sign in his office that reads, "I know worry works because nothing I worry about ever happens."
This resonates with me because I tend to worry a lot, about both the big things?"like health, relationships, and finances?"and the small, seemingly insignificant things. My frequent worrying prompted me to undertake a personal project to better understand and manage it. If you're also looking for peace of mind, you might want to join me.
Here’s what I’m exploring:
1. Recognize the Habit
I’ve started to catch myself when I worry. During a recent swim, I realized I worried 10 times in just one lap. It's a mental habit, but habits can be changed. Recognizing this gives me hope.2. Practice Presence
I'm working on staying present by stopping my thoughts. In my workshops, I use a bell to help participants center themselves. The longer we listen to the fading sound of the bell, the more peaceful we become. In these moments, there are no thoughts, just peace?"the kind I want to connect with more often.3. Decide on Action
My friend Rosie suggests handling worries by doing one of three things: address the issue immediately, schedule a time to deal with it later, or recognize it's unimportant and let it go. In essence, act, schedule, or release.4. Find Joy in Singing
Rosie and I both enjoy singing as a way to dissolve worry. It helps us connect with our inner selves and creativity, reminding us that everything is okay.Embrace Awareness
Awareness and acknowledgment are key to changing habits. Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido, referred to it as the Art of Peace. He advocated practicing it with vitality and joy. Perhaps through this exploration, I can learn to live each day with a smile and a lighter heart. If you find yourself worrying, pause and listen to the world around you. Be present in the moment, and smile?"sometimes, that's the best reason of all.
