What is Perfectionism?

Perfectionism is the relentless pursuit of excellence. A perfectionist embodies this trait, striving for flawlessness in all they do.

In our society, perfectionism is often seen as a positive attribute. Notice that I call it a "belief." It’s an ideal deeply ingrained in our culture: imperfections are often viewed negatively. Employers expect impeccable performance from their staff, and parents desire the very best from their children. Perfectionists demand faultlessness from themselves and their work.

Given its esteemed status, is perfectionism truly a universal virtue? I believe it is not. Perfection is a relative concept born from human perception. It represents an imagined ideal, while reality simply is what it is. Perfection and imperfection are subjective values imposed on circumstances.

This isn't to say perfectionism lacks merit. It's important to recognize, however, that it can sometimes overshadow our happiness. Achieving goals doesn’t necessarily require perfectionism. The challenge lies in its restrictive nature; perfectionism leaves little room for self-acceptance and unconditional love when outcomes fall short of expectations. If desires aren’t fulfilled, dissatisfaction often follows.

In reality, we have only the present moment to live in. A perfectionist mind, constantly planning for the future or dwelling on past mistakes, can hinder contentment. Many perfectionists struggle with satisfaction, as they feel their efforts are never enough to achieve true contentment.

This brings us to a life paradox:

"How can one find perfect peace, self-love, and joy when bound by perfectionism?"
