Setting Date-Specific Goals: Must-Haves, Whys, and Hows
Deciding to make a change in your life is a powerful step. Whether you're starting a home-based business or seeking more focus, setting goals is crucial for both short-term and long-term success. In this article, I'll share a technique I use for goal setting and provide a worksheet to guide you.
The Dynamic Nature of Goal Setting
Goal setting isn’t a one-time exercise. It's essential to document your goals, creating a living document. Reevaluate this every three months. Ask yourself: Did I meet my goals? Do I have new desires? Are my current goals still aligned with my ultimate objectives?
The MWH Analysis: Must-Haves, Whys, and Hows
The technique I use is called the Must-Haves, Whys, and Hows (MWH) Analysis. Download the worksheet here: [MWH_Worksheet.doc](http://www.at-home-incomes.com/downloads/MWH_Worksheet.doc). This worksheet contains two sections: the MWH analysis and setting date-specific goals.
The MWH Template
This template helps you organize your thoughts, hopes, and desires. You'll see repeated sections:
- Must Have: Identify your desires and wants. What’s important to you? It could be material possessions or simply spending more time with family. These desires form the basis of your goals.
- Why: For each Must Have, determine why it's important. Is it essential for a life change? Was it a dream put aside due to life’s demands? Understanding your Whys categorizes your goals.
- How: Decide how you’ll achieve each Must Have. Will you start a business? Get a second job? Save or invest money? Determining the Hows completes the exercise.
Example of MWH Analysis
- Must Have: Financial security
Why: To ensure a stable retirement and support my family
How: Invest gains from online ventures into stocks and real estate
- Must Have: Regular tithing
Why: Because it’s the right thing to do
How: Allocate 10% of income
Categorizing and Prioritizing Goals
Once your analysis is complete, categorize your MWHs by timeframes: daily, 3-month, 6-month, 1-year, 5-year, and 10-year goals. Make sure each goal is date-specific. Without an end date, a goal remains a mere desire. Deadlines provide metrics for evaluating progress.
Examples of My Goals
1. Daily Goals:
a. Spend 1-1.5 hours promoting my business.
b. Read my goals daily.
2. 3-Month Goals:
a. By April 30, enroll 10 new team members.
b. By May 31, have 15 new enrollees and assist the first 10 members in recruiting.
Daily Engagement with Your Goals
Once your worksheet is complete, the key is to engage with it daily. Dedicate 10-15 minutes each day as "me time" to focus on your worksheet. Make several copies and keep them accessible.
Reading your goals daily will help you strategize your day. Ask yourself: What am I doing today to move closer to my goals? Wise time management is crucial, as time once lost is never regained.
A Living Document for Success
Using the MWH analysis worksheet lets you document and evaluate your desires. Once you've outlined your MWH steps, transform them into date-specific goals, creating a living document to guide your daily actions toward achieving them.
By following this structured approach, you’ll set clear, actionable goals that drive personal and professional growth.
