If You Don't Know What You Want, How Will You Get It?

Summary

To hit a target, first identify where it is and what it looks like. Only then can you hit the bull's-eye consistently.

Article Body

Recently, I spoke with a client looking to host a workshop at an upcoming conference. I offer various talks, so I asked about the conference's focus to suggest a relevant topic. The client mentioned that while several programs were chosen, a focus hadn't been defined yet. My immediate thought was, "If you don’t know what you want, how will you achieve it?" Instead of voicing my concern, we continued the conversation and eventually settled on a program she wanted me to present.

It's always surprising how often individuals neglect to identify what they want to achieve. This isn’t just limited to conferences?"many people carry out activities in their careers without defining clear objectives. They complete tasks but lack focus on achieving specific results.

During my time as a human resources executive, I frequently helped people identify the appropriate roles needed in their teams. Department heads often drafted job descriptions detailing tasks but overlooked defining expected outcomes. It required effort to shift their focus from tasks to results. With coaching, we could pinpoint the results expected from key positions.

Why is it crucial to define outcomes for a job, meeting, department, or any situation? Without knowing your outcome, you risk wasting time and resources pursuing a vague target you might never hit. Outcomes direct your path, providing crucial information on using resources, time, money, and personnel. When you know your outcome, you can continually assess whether your actions support your goal or divert you.

Clearly defined outcomes can also be motivating. I once worked with a coaching client who had an idea for a new business. Initially excited, she didn't take any steps to make it a reality, citing various excuses. I encouraged her to write a detailed description of her desired outcome for the business. That was the turning point. Once she defined her outcome, she took the necessary steps to start her business. Five years later, she runs a thriving business she loves.

Some people struggle to determine outcomes because they face an uncertain future. A helpful strategy is to imagine the outcome has already been achieved and describe it. For example, with the conference planner, I asked, "Let's say it's six months after the conference, and it was a huge success. What would make you say that?" This approach revealed that success meant attendees gained tools to handle changes in their industry more effectively. With this information, I suggested a program that aligned with these objectives.

Before you take any action, consider what you want to achieve. Clearly defining your outcome will streamline efforts, accelerate progress, and help you reach your goals. When you know your destination, you're far more likely to get there.
