Achieving Your Desires with a Goal Achievement System - Part 2
Summary
We’re about to transform your grand goal into a series of achievable steps. Using the example from part 1, we'll illustrate how to make your aspirations a reality.Article Body
In part 1, we discussed how to set specific, time-bound, and positively oriented goals, and how to visualize success. Now, in part 2, we’ll map out a step-by-step plan to achieve your goal. Remember:“You can't reach the top of the mountain in one leap, but you can get there step by step.”
Our aim is to deconstruct your big goal into smaller, manageable steps. Let’s continue with the example from part 1, where the goal was to lose 30 pounds in 10 weeks. This is our ultimate mission, or mission statement. Your statement should be visible as a constant reminder:
“Today is December 5, and I am 30 pounds lighter. I look better and feel great. People compliment my healthier appearance, and I now enjoy activities that my weight once limited.”
Breaking Down the Goal
We’ll divide the 10-week timeline into achievable milestones. Bear in mind that losing 30 pounds in 10 weeks is challenging and might not be healthy for everyone. Consult your physician about realistic goals for your body.Consider this schedule:
- Weeks 1 & 2: Lose 4 pounds per week
- Weeks 3-8: Lose 3 pounds per week
- Weeks 9 & 10: Lose 2 pounds per week
These milestones recognize that shedding the first few pounds is generally easier than the last few. Each milestone brings you closer to your goal and acts like a staircase up your mountain.
Creating Milestones
On index cards or sticky notes, break down each milestone into daily targets. For instance:Week 1 Milestone: Lose 4 pounds
- Monday: Run 1 mile
- Tuesday: Lift weights for 30 minutes
- Wednesday: Run 1 mile
- Thursday: Lift weights for 30 minutes
- Friday: Run 1.25 miles
- Saturday: Lift weights for 30 minutes
- Sunday: Rest (eat healthily!)
If you like, dive deeper by planning meals and sleep schedules. Being specific increases your chances of success.
Maintain a Structured Plan
Remember the straight-A students who struggled in college? In high school, structured schedules helped them thrive. Without structure in college, they faltered. Planning out your steps will prevent this.Though planning might seem time-consuming, it’s just a small fraction of the time you’ll spend achieving your mission. If you dedicate 5 hours a week to your goal, what’s an extra half-hour upfront? Here’s a tip to get started: Write down your milestone schedule as your first actionable goal!
Remember, success begins with a plan. Plan to succeed, and your dreams will follow.
